    Stress State Required for Pyramidal Dislocation Movement in Zinc

    A tension or compression stress in such a direction that basal slip is minimized can produce second-order pyramidal slip bands in zinc single crystals. The stress required to initiate pyramidal dislocation motion is not sensitive to temperature. However, dislocation velocity at a given stress is sensitive to temperature and the very small dislocation velocity at low temperatures has lead to an erroneous estimate of a ``starting stress'' for pyramidal dislocations. Dislocation velocity at a constant temperature was found to be a function of the magnitude, but not the sense of the resolved shear stress

    Twinning and Slip in Zinc by Indentation

    Observations of twinning and slip deformation caused by indentation of zinc reveal that extensive slip on the basal and second-order pyramidal systems takes place at loads up to 5 kg. Prismatic punching through 1-cm crystals is observed at indentation loads in excess of about 2.5 kg. It is concluded that the stress at the tip of the twins cannot be obtained by use of an elastic stress analysis

    Orientation Dependence of a Dislocation Etch for Zinc

    The dislocation etch for (101-[bar]0] surfaces of zinc reported by Brandt, Adams, and Vreeland have been further explored. Additional surface orientations have been found where dislocation etching takes place. These orientations cover an area located between 3 degrees and 12.2 degrees to the [0001], and the area is symmetric about that axis. Attempts to produce dislocation etching on within 2 degrees of (0001) were generally unsuccessful. This is in contrast to etching of many crystals which takes place only within a few degrees of a low index plane

    Study of solution procedures for nonlinear structural equations

    A method for the redution of the cost of solution of large nonlinear structural equations was developed. Verification was made using the MARC-STRUC structure finite element program with test cases involving single and multiple degrees of freedom for static geometric nonlinearities. The method developed was designed to exist within the envelope of accuracy and convergence characteristic of the particular finite element methodology used

    Joint for deployable structures

    A joint is described for connecting a pair of beams to pivot them between positions in alignment or beside one another, which is of light weight and which operates in a controlled manner. The joint includes a pair of fittings and at least one center link having opposite ends pivotally connected to opposite fittings and having axes that pass through centerplates of the fittings. A control link having opposite ends pivotally connected to the different fittings controls their relative orientations, and a toggle assemly holds the fittings in the deployed configuration wherein they are aligned. The fittings have stops that lie on one side of the centerplane opposite the toggle assembly

    Gardner-Webb, The Magazine, previously titled The Webb Magazine, focuses on alumni news and campus events from Gardner-Webb College; now Gardner-Webb University. This issue of the magazine won the Collegiate Advertising Awards (CAA) and Gold Award for single magazine publication and the Merit Award for cover graphic design. This dual achievement has only been attained by five schools in the nation. Merit Award for cover graphic design, this award recognizes excellence across the board, including writing, graphic design, photography and production. Criteria for the award included creativity, layout and design, functionality, message effectiveness, production quality, and overall appeal. GWU’s entry earned the highest marks for single magazine publication among institutions with 2,000 to 5,000 students.
